Seven Run 2nd Inning Helps Owls in 9-4 Win Over Asheboro

Asheboro, NC (14 July, 2018) Owls explode for seven runs in the second inning to help propel them to a 9-4 win over the Asheboro Copperheads from McCrary Park.

"We played a complete game from top to bottom, clean on all aspects for the most part and that usually leads to a good result" said head coach Matt Reed.

The Snakes would strike first in the game with a solo home run from Ethan Harrison but the Owls would answer back in a monster way.

In the 2nd inning, Joe Vranesh and Elijah Henderson would get on with base hits (Vranesh with a double) and it would be first baseman Houston Wright to drive in Vranesh with an RBI single.

After Corbin Watson would get on first with a fielder's choice, and Henderson on third.  Derek Perry would deliver with an RBI double to extend the Owls lead to 2-1.

Kendall McGowan would get on with a walk the next at bat, and it would be Jordan Eckard to get on the hitting wagon and drive in Watson and Perry, pushing the lead to a 4-1 score.

"We have had some bad luck go our way the past three or four games and to have the ball that Eckard hit off the third base bag played a big factor in getting us going tonight" said Reed.

With two on and two out, it would be Garrett Blaylock out of Vanderbilt to hit a three run home run to right field to mark a seven run inning for the Owls.  Forest City would send 11 hitters to the plate, and all but one of the nine batters reached base in the inning.

"We did a good job with our situational hitting, as I said last night one of our problems was not trying to do too much and just go up there a do what you need to do and tonight we did that" said Reed.

The Owls would add one more in the top of the 4th after Perry would single, steal two bases and be driven in by Eckard. The Snakes would get one back in the bottom of the 4th on a solo home run by Jesse Gonzalez.

Tristen Campbell would make his Owls debut against Asheboro and would pitch a great first outing.  Campbell would go five innings, giving up only three runs on six hits against one of the best hitting teams in the Coastal Plain League.

"He [Campbell] did a good job pitching with the lead and getting the lead off guy out and really making it tough for them to mount a comeback" said Reed.

Both the Owls and the Copperheads would add one extra run to their total.  Asheboro in the bottom of the 8th with an RBI, infield single, from Brandt Ollinger and the Owls in the top of the 9th with an RBI single from Blaylock, scoring Eckard who got on via a double.  Blaylock finished the game with four RBIs.

The relief pitching for the Owls would pitch stellar with Erik Holton pitching a scoreless 6th with two strike outs, Brock Minich going two innings and giving up one run on two hits and Dillon Phillips closing the game out with two strike outs in the 9th to hold the 9-4 victory for the Owls.

The Forest City Owls will take on the Martinsville Mustangs on Monday, July 14 from McNair Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and tickets can be purchased at forestcitybaseball.com
